프롬스는 산책하다는 뜻의 프롬나드와 콘서트의 합성어로 산책하듯 가볍게 즐기는 클래식 음악회를 의미한다.
1895년 영국의 BBC방송국 주관으로 시작된 프롬스는 어렵고 고상한 문화라는 기존 클래식 음악회의 이미지를 허무는 계기가 되었고
현재 영국인뿐 아니라 세계인이 사랑하는 클래식 페스티벌로 성장하였다.
가을의 길목에서 클래식 대중화를 위해 9월 광주시립교향악단이 특별한 음악회 『GSO PROMS』를 마련했다.
특히, 이번 음악회는 체코야냐첵필하모닉오케스트라 상임지휘자인 하이코 마티아스 풰스터의 지휘로 광주문화재단이
세계적인 작곡가 마이클 도허티(미국)에게 위촉 의뢰한 “님을 위한 행진곡”(원곡:김종률)을 주제로 한 창작 관현악곡
『민주의 노래(Song of Democrary for Orchestra)』 를 세계 초연으로 선보이는 뜻깊은 음악회이다.
이외 한 번쯤 들어봤음직한 다양한 클래식 명곡들로 꾸며지는 이번 음악회로 클래식 산책을 떠나보자.

1954년, 미국 출생
마이클 도허티(Michael Daugherty)는 슈퍼맨, Jackie O(재키 오-케네디 대통령 부인), 엘비스 프레슬리 등 미국의 대중문화를 작품의 소재로 삼는 ‘음악계의 앤디 워홀’로 불릴만한 세계적인 작곡가이다.
맨하탄 음대와 예일대학교를 졸업했으며, 세계 전자음악의 메카인 프랑스 퐁피두 센터의 IRCAM(전자음향연구소)에서의 수학했다. 또한 독일에서 현대음악의 거장, 조지 리게티와 작곡을 사사했다.
마이클 도허티의 작품은 특히 관현악곡에서 두각을 나타내는데, 미국 오케스트라 협회 통계로 현존하는 작곡가 중, 가장 많이 연주되는 작곡가 5인에 들기도 하였다.
대표작으로는 ‘메트로폴리스 교향곡’과 피아노협주곡 ‘데우스 엑스 마키나’가 있으며, 2010년, 2011년, 2017년 세 번에 걸쳐 그래미 상(베스트 클래식 컨템포러리 작곡상)을 수상한 명실공히 세계 톱 작곡가이다.
광주에서는 2017.11월 국립아시아문화전당 개관 1주년 기념 페스티벌에 참여하여 ‘아시아를 위한 심포니’ 페스티벌에서 ’아메리칸 고딕‘을 한국 초연 한 바 있다.(광주시립교향악단 연주)
현대 미국 미시건 대학 교수로 재직 중이며, 세계 최고 권위의 출판사인 Peermusic Classical, Boosey & Hawkes 그리고 2010년 부터는 Michael Daugherty Music/Bill Holab Music이 출판과 매니지먼트를 담당하고 있다.

PROGRAM NOTE
Songs of Democracy for orchestra was commissioned by the Gwangju Cultural Foundation to commemorate the “Gwangju Democratic Uprising”, which took place in the city of Gwangju, South Korea from May 18～27, 1980. My 17 minute work for orchestra takes its title from Songs of Democracy, a book of poems by the American poet Walt Whitman (1819～1892). For Whitman, dreams of democracy conjured “songs of passion…than have ever yet been heard upon the earth.”
In the first movement, “Beloved”, I have composed reflective and expressive music which meditates upon the memory of human souls throughout history who have died fighting for democracy. I incorporate a fragment of the South Korean folk song “March of our Beloved” composed in memory of the those who died in the infamous May 1980 “Gwangju Democratic Uprising” massacre.
For the second movement “Freedom”, I have composed exuberant and vibrant music to celebrate the political liberties, civil rights, and religious freedoms brought about by such important figures as Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Jr., the Dalai Lama, Nelson Mandela, Abraham Lincoln and countless unknown others.

Multiple GRAMMY Award-winning composer Michael Daugherty was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa in 1954. He has achieved international recognition as one of the ten most performed American composers of concert music, according to the League of American Orchestras. His orchestral music, recorded by Naxos over the last two decades, has received six GRAMMY awards, including Best Contemporary Classical Composition in 2011 and 2017.
Recent performances of Daugherty’s orchestral music include the Nashville Symphony, the Philadelphia Orchestra, Pacific Symphony, Detroit Symphony Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra (United Kingdom), Orquestra Sinfônica do Estado de São Paulo (Brazil), Orchestra Sinfonica Toscanini (Italy), Melbourne Symphony Orchestra (Australia), Bayerische Staatsphilharmonie (Germany) and the Seoul Phiharmonic Orchestra (Korea).
As a young man, Daugherty studied composition with many of the preeminent composers of the 20th century including Jacob Druckman, Earle Brown, Bernard Rands and Roger Reynolds at Yale, Pierre Boulez at IRCAM in Paris and György Ligeti in Hamburg. Daugherty was also an assistant to jazz arranger Gil Evans in New York from 1980-82. In 1991, Daugherty joined the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre and Dance as Professor of Composition, where he is a mentor to many of today’s most talented young composers. He is also a frequent guest of professional orchestras, festivals, universities and conservatories around the world.
